Physical Therapist Richmond, VA

Welcome to Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Inc.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy Inc. is celebrating over 39 years of operation as a Henrico County business!  We continuously strive to establish an open and professional relationship with our patients.  Patient care is based on determining the source of the pain.

The evaluating physical therapist uses their knowledge and skills to reach functional goals. In most cases, the evaluation and treatment sessions will be with the same therapist. This fosters a continuum of care and encourages consistency. If an issue arises that needs a specialized evaluation, the appropriate therapist will be consulted.

All of the therapists at Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Inc. specialize in manual therapy.  This approach includes advanced skills and emphasizes direct, hands-on treatment. Many of our therapists have received international certification in trigger point dry needling, which can often be a faster, more effective method of treating the true source of your pain.  Our goal is to return the patient to the best functional and pain-free level possible.

We have important and exciting news to pass along!

Starting on July 1, 2023, patients will be able to see a physical therapist directly without any script limitations. Previously patients needed an updated script after 60 consecutive days had passed since the evaluation. Patients with Medicare will still need a script for treatment per Medicare’s rules. Also, as of July 1, 2023, no script will be necessary for any patient to receive dry needling treatments.

Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Peter Rowe, discussed common emergency room presentations related to circulatory dysfunction in Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), including syncope, POTS, and more at today's event. He emphasized the importance of differentiating between low-risk vasovagal syncopal events and serious causes of syncope. Here's what these terms mean:🔹Syncope: This is when someone faints or passes out suddenly. It happens because there's a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain, which causes a brief loss of consciousness and muscle control. It's like your body hitting the reset button when something disrupts blood and oxygen flow to your brain.🔹Presyncope: This is the feeling that you might faint or pass out, but you don't actually lose consciousness. It's like feeling woozy, lightheaded, or dizzy as if you're about to faint, but you manage to stay awake. It's sort of like your body's warning sign that you might faint if the condition causing it isn't addressed.🔹Reflex syncope: This type of fainting is triggered by certain reflexes in your body. For example, when you stand up too quickly, your body might not adjust to the change in position fast enough, causing a sudden drop in blood pressure and making you faint. It's like your body's automatic response to specific triggers that disrupt the balance of blood flow and cause a temporary loss of consciousness. Key approaches include using IV saline for symptom improvement in low-risk patients and recognizing red flags for serious neurological issues. The talk also highlighted the prevalence of orthostatic intolerance in this patient population and provided guidance for emergency room personnel on diagnosis and management strategies. People with EDS and HSD most commonly have a form of orthostatic intolerance. “Orthostasis” means to stand upright, so orthostatic intolerance refers to symptoms that occur due to standing up or being upright. The two most common types of orthostatic intolerance are: 1️⃣ Orthostatic hypotension (OH) — low blood pressure on being upright.2️⃣ Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) — an abnormal increase in heart rate when standing without a drop in blood pressure.Learn more here: www.ehlers-danlos.com/dysautonomia/ ...
